FXKEYB.COM
Version 1.02; 7/25/89
(Produces KEYB.COM dated 7/10/89, 12:00p)
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
INTRODUCTION:
FXKEYB.COM is a patch program that will **>REPLACE<** the KEYB.COM
international keyboard driver from any version of COMPAQ DOS 3.31,
revision D or earlier.
FXKEYB is run JUST ONE TIME in order to replace the KEYB.COM
program on the target disk. Then the new KEYB.COM may be used as usual.
This latest version of FXKEYB.COM adds fixes for PAUSE key usage with
PCOX 3270 applications.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
any COMPAQ Computer and
COMPAQ MS-DOS Version 3.31 Rev a,b,c or d
WHO SHOULD USE:
The KEYB.COM produced by FXKEYB.COM fixes THREE areas of difficulty:
1) KEYB.COM does not allow Novell's PCOX 3270 emulation program to
properly interpret the use of the PAUSE key. PCOX 3270 uses the
PAUSE key to clear the screen. This fix allows the proper
interpretation of the PAUSE key with PCOX 3270.
2) Problems with CTRL-ALT-< and CTRL-ALT-> when being used to toggle
between internal and external monitors on various COMPAQ video
systems with KEYB installed.
The new KEYB handles CTRL-ALT-< and > in a consistent manner with
systems that do NOT have KEYB installed. Operation is now much more
transparent to the user.
3) Problems with software that uses INT 19h to quickly re-load DOS
crashing systems with KEYB installed. These operations are
now consistent with those systems that do NOT have KEYB installed.
Operation is now much more transparent to the user.
HOW TO USE:
1. Copy the program FXKEYB.COM from the distribution diskette
to your system diskette or fixed disk.
2. Use the DOS DIRectory command to look around on your disk and find
out where the KEYB.COM program is stored. Write down the PATH to
where KEYB.COM is stored. You will need it for the next step.
3. Run the FXKEYB program and specify the location of KEYB.COM
using a command line parameter.
The syntax of the program is:
FXKEYB [d:][path] <carriage return>
where [d:] is the drivename (A: or C: etc.)
and [path] is the name of the subdirectory that KEYB.COM is stored in.
EXAMPLE: Type "FXKEYB C:\DOS" to replace a KEYB.COM stored in C:\DOS
Comments:
a) If the PATH is not specified on the FXKEYB command line,
FXKEYB will use the current directory.
b) FXKEYB WILL ABORT if KEYB.COM is NOT FOUND!!
KEYB.COM MUST BE PRESENT in either the PATH SPECIFIED ON THE
COMMAND LINE or in the CURRENT DIRECTORY.
4. When the package is successfully installed, you will get
the following message:
Upgrade Utility for Compaq DOS 3.31 KEYB.COM program
Version 1.01 (C) Copyright Compaq Computer Corporation 1989
Updating C:\DOS\KEYB.COM
Update complete
If the package is not successfully installed, an error message
will be generated. If ANY ERRORS are encountered, KEYB.COM WILL NOT
be updated.
HOW TO IDENTIFY THE PATCHED VERSION OF KEYB.COM:
1) The new KEYB.COM has a date of 07/10/89 and a time of 12:00:00.
(FXKEYB places this date & time on the new KEYB.COM NO MATTER WHEN
FXKEYB is run.)
2) Two of the messages from KEYB now have asterisks in them to help
you identify the patched version of KEYB:
a) When KEYB is NOT installed, type "KEYB" at the DOS prompt.
