SPEED.SYS
INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
INTRODUCTION:
This patch corrects a problem with mouse movement in Windows 3.0,
Enhanced Mode.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
The reported problem only occurs on the Compaq Deskpro
386s/16, with BIOS ROM release 386F_P3, dated 3/27/90.
WHO SHOULD USE:
The mouse cursor moves very slowly when a floppy disk drive is being
accessed from Window's File Manager. This symptom occurs if the DP386s
is set for Mode Speed = Auto; it works properly with Mode Speed = High.
This problem is caused by an erroneous timer value in BIOS ROM, which
is used by the Mode Speed Auto routine.
SPEED.SYS alters the BIOS Shadow RAM area to insert the correct timer
value for Mode Speed Auto.
HOW TO USE:
1. Copy the program SPEED.SYS to your system diskette or fixed disk.
2. Using an editor, add a line to your CONFIG.SYS file to execute the
command at system boot. The syntax of the line addition is:
DEVICE=[d:][path]SPEED.SYS
Refer to your MS-DOS Reference Guide for more detailed
instructions.
3. When the package is successfully installed, the following message
displays:
SPEED.SYS, executed
Copyright (c) 1990 COMPAQ COMPUTER CORPORATION.
If the package is not successfully installed, an error message
will be generated.
COMMENTS:
1. SPEED.SYS terminates immediately after driver initialization, and
does not remain memory resident.
